Two small books nest inside of an iconic Hanjin-crane-shaped-box. This style crane can be found at the port of Oakland, a site explored in the two nested books.

horizon is a panoramic portrait of the park that the port of Oakland gave to the city of Oakland in the effort to improve public relations.  This park, constructed at the location of a historic naval shipping yard, reflects the history of the location while providing present visitors with a usable public space that facilitates visual participation with the activities of a busy port. The book expands out to six feet—a panoramic portrait constructed from smaller slices.

shipping explores the complex relationship that the port has with the city and people of Oakland.  Many goods are moved through this strategically placed port (and much money is made), yet the port authority exists in isolation—it reports to no one, pays no city taxes, and is its own political entity, resulting in tension between the people of Oakland, the city of Oakland and the port.
